History
What the record shows
Sesshū travelled to the sandbar of Ama-no-Hashidate on the Sea of Japan and composed the view from an imagined elevation.
The work is assembled from joined sheets of paper, with visible corrections that show the artist's working method.
Designated a National Treasure, its movement within Japan is governed by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and it is effectively never lent abroad.
