What the record shows
Leonardo's experimental dry technique began failing within decades, and the mural has been restored repeatedly since the sixteenth century.
Allied bombing destroyed the refectory roof in 1943; the wall survived behind sandbags. Access is now limited to timed groups in a climate-controlled vestibule.
